Jacob Jonker, M.M. - Instructor
The Duluth Guitar Academy provides private guitar lessons for all ages, specializing in Classical Guitar and the Suzuki Method.
Jacob Jonker holds a Master's Degree in Guitar Performance from the University of Minnesota - Minneapolis, where he studied under Jeffrey Van. Prior to that he studied under Joseph Hagedorn at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls. While in school Jacob received first prize from the Schubert Club and second prize from the Thursday Musical Scholarship Competitions. He joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota - Duluth in 2008, and the University of Wisconsin - Superior in 2017.
Jacob has given multiple performances for the Minnesota Guitar Society both as a "Local Artist Series" recitalist and as part of their annual "Guitarathon" concert. In addition to solo recitals, he has performed with the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, Twin Ports Choral Project, Lyric Opera of the North, Twin Ports Wind Orchestra, UMD Chamber Singers, and numerous other respected local musicians. He has also received grants from the Duluth Homegrown Music Festival and the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council.
Jacob's students have had the opportunity to receive instruction from leading classical guitar performers including William Kanengiser, Jason Vieaux, Berta Rojas, and the Brasil Guitar Duo, and regularly attend Suzuki Institutes and the International Conference in Minneapolis.
Jacob has received Suzuki pedagogy training in all 9 Suzuki Guitar books through the Suzuki Association of the Americas, training with David Madsen, William Kossler and Andrea Cannon. He is committed to fostering a high standard of character and musicianship in all his students.
